Listen to the Captain David Seath Memorial Fund BFBS Scotland Radio Interview

I recently joined Fiona Chalmers at BFBS Scotland for a radio interview about her incredible fundraising in support of the Captain David Seath Memorial Fund.

Fiona, who will run the Stirling Scottish Marathon in support of the Captain David Seath Memorial in May, served with David in 19th Regiment Royal Artillery (The Scottish Gunners) during operation Herrick 16 in Afghanistan.

I was honoured to join Fiona for an interview with BFBS Scotland’s Mark McKenzie to provide an update with regards to our fundraising activities in support of David’s legacy including a 5K memorial run, golf day and pub quiz.

The Captain David Seath Memorial Fund Golf Day

We are delighted to announce our inaugural Captain David Seath Memorial Fund Golf Day will take place at the Fairmont, St Andrews on Thursday 31 August 2017. From the moment you arrive with your work colleagues, friends or family, we promise everyone a fantastic experience at the home of golf. View promotional video

Prepare for Golf Day Success!
Q. How do I prepare for golf day glory?
A. A hearty breakfast & a golf clinic with a team of PGA professionals.
We look forward to welcoming our guests at the Fairmont Clubhouse, where a hearty breakfast will be waiting after completing registration. An official welcome will be provided by our host, David Tanner of Sky Sports, and teams will then make their way to the range to begin a clinic with Fairmont’s PGA golf professionals.

Own It!
Q. Does a hearty breakfast and golf clinic ensure I will hit the ball straight?
A. We think so… Well maybe….
In a tribute to Captain Seath, who served in 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery, a round from a 105mm will be fired to start our teams off for 18 holes of texas scramble on the highly renowned Kittocks Course. The artillery theme will continue on the course through a longest drive target competition and co-ordinates will be provided for two closest the pin challenges.

Reflect
Q. Will I be able to retrieve the ball I used to hit a 6 iron into the North Sea… when it was an 8 iron all day long?
A. No, absolutely not!
As you contemplate the shots you left out on the course and the injustice of pot-hole bunkers, we can offer the consolation of a delicious two course meal in the Fairmont clubhouse lounge which provides dramatic, panoramic views of the East coast of Fife. Our winners on the day will be announced and presented with their prizes. David Tanner will provide an engaging interview with sporting celebrities followed by an auction of sporting memorabilia to complete the evening.

So, what next?
We are taking team bookings for four people, at £100 per person. Please register four tickets (http://bit.ly/2fvCTe5) and we will collect payment on the day. For further information, please contact gary.seath@outlook.com

Brian’s Story

Brian Seggie recently received a financial grant through The Captain David Seath Memorial Fund and has very kindly permitted us to share his letter of thanks sent to the Seath family.

“I would like to send my sincere condolences to your family for the very sudden and tragic loss of such a dedicated and charitable officer who clearly cared for the soldiers in his command. I am one of the many beneficiaries that have benefited from The Captain David Seath Memorial Fund through Help for Heroes. The financial grant enabled me to purchase sporting equipment which allowed me to train and compete at the recent Warrior Games, West Point Academy, New York.

“I am a soldier in the Recovery Pathway and have numerous combat related psychological injuries and when I am training or competing, it really compliments my formal medical treatment which is very challenging.I can assure your family that due to this generous grant, David has left a legacy to support wounded, injured and sick personnel now and well into the future.

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart for enabling me to achieve my personal best at the Warrior Games whilst representing the UK Armed Forces. I will continue to do my best in all that I do in David’s memory.”

The Captain David Seath Memorial Fund was established by the Seath family and Help for Heroes following the tragic death of Captain David Seath, who was running the London Marathon in support of Help for Heroes Official.

The Captain David Seath Memorial Fund has, to date, provided over 150 financial grants as a means to support wounded, injured and sick personnel and veterans like Brian rebuild their lives through Help for Heroes.

Ali’s Story

Ali served as an officer in the Royal Engineers and lost both his legs as a result of an explosion in Afghanistan in 2011. Thanks to the support from the military and the generosity of the wider community, Ali successfully progressed through rehabilitation and rebuilt his life.

Ali resides in a beautiful location surrounded by stunning Scottish hills and forestry. Ali was determined to enjoy the outdoor pursuits he had prior to his life changing injuries, but faced a considerable obstacle.

Ali Said:

“I live in a beautiful part of Scotland surrounded by forests and hills but, as you can imagine, this is challenging terrain for prosthetics and wheelchairs.”

A financial grant was provided through The Captain David Seath Memorial Fund for Ali to purchase an off-road hand bike as a means to enjoy his outdoor pursuits.

Ali continues:

“I can’t tell you how amazing it is to be able to jump on the bike and get out into the hills again. It is these simple pleasures which make such a difference. t really has made such a difference to my enjoyment of life. I am never off the thing now. I managed to roll it going round a track bend to fast so now my wife has forced me to wear a helmet. The dog is exhausted from all the long walks he is getting as well.”

Ali wrote an incredibly emotional letter of thanks to the Seath family who are overwhelmed David’s legacy has provided the vital support Ali deserves having given so much in service of his country.

Ali said:

“I am deeply sorry for your loss, I never knew David but share in the grief as all who are in the military feel when they hear about the passing of a brother officer. I want you to know that David’s legacy is bringing joy and life to many others.”

You can ensure our work supporting wounded personnel and veterans continues by donating today in support of The Captain David Seath Memorial Fund.

1145 (Dunfermline) Squadron Air Cadets Presentation

We very much enjoyed the opportunity to visit air cadets and staff of 1145 (Dunfermline) Squadron on Thursday 09 February 2017, who have very kindly chosen The Captain David Seath Memorial Fund as their charity of the year.

Captain David Seath served as a cadet with 1145 (Dunfermline) Squadron prior to attending Sandhurst Military Academy and serving with distinction as an Officer of 19th Regiment Royal Artillery and 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery in Afghanistan and the Middle East.

We delivered a presentation describing our work providing financial grants to wounded, injured and sick personnel and veterans in partnership with Help for Heroes. Cadets were keen to learn how beneficiaries have used the financial grants, provided by The Captain David Seath Memorial Fund, to rebuild their lives following physical and psychological trauma.

Following our presentation, cadets shared a wide of ideas with us in terms of how they can support the Captain David Seath Memorial Fund this year, including sponsored running, bake sale, collections and a race night. We also discussed ways we can support cadets working their way through the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme through playing active roles in the organisation of our fundraising events.

1145 (Dunfermline) Squadron said:

“1145 (Dunfermline) Squadron and its cadets and staff are excited to embark on this exciting partnership with The Captain David Seath Memorial Fund. During his time as a cadet on the squadron David worked his way to becoming a cadet sergeant and amassed a collection of awards and accolades, he was an inspiration to his peers and made a huge impact on those he met and whilst our cadets did not meet him, his presence still remains strongly in the squadron’s history and archives. Our cadets are proud to call him one of own and are keen to be a part of his legacy.”

Gary Seath, Founder of The Captain David Seath Memorial Fund said:

“We are delighted that 1145 (Dunfermline) Squadron have chosen The Captain David Seath Memorial Fund as their charity of the year. David gained such a wide range of experiences as a member of the squadron which provided an important grounding for his later career as an Officer in 19th Regiment and 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery. We look forward to working with the air cadets and staff on a whole host of fundraising activities.”

Our sincere thanks to 1145 (Dunfermline) Squadron for their continued support of The Captain David Seath Memorial Fund.

Establishing David’s Legacy

Eight months on from the tragic events at the 2016 London Marathon, The Captain David Seath Memorial Fund has raised over £250,000 and supported over 154 wounded, injured and sick personnel and veterans through Help for Heroes.

It’s unbelievable to think that it’s been six months since David’s tragic death running the London Marathon. There’s hardly a minute I don’t think about David and, despite the horrors of the past months and continued sense of loss and devastation, working on his legacy has provided a critical, positive focus.

To date, over £250,000 has been generously donated in support of The Captain David Seath Memorial Fund, and we are so incredibly grateful to everyone who has donated money, organised or participated in fundraising activities across the country over the past six months. Without your generosity, support and dedication there would be no legacy…it’s as simple as that.
The ability to understand, react, and respond effectively to any given situation were integral to David’s role as a Captain at 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery. In establishing The Captain David Seath Memorial Fund, it was very important our response embodied the aforementioned attributes.

Working in partnership with Help for Heroes, the funds are used to provide financial grants to wounded, injured and sick personnel and veterans as a means to rebuild their lives following physical and emotional trauma. The funds are distributed through Help for Heroes’ Quick Reaction Fund (QRF), which means the funds can reach beneficiaries within 72 hours.

So far, over 150 financial grants have been provided through the QRF, where beneficiaries have used the funds to purchase specialist equipment, facilitate essential home and car adaptations, fund respite breaks and initiate vocational and employment opportunities. We have received letters from several beneficiaries which are incredibly emotional to read, but inspiring at the same time.

I am delighted to say our work will continue and we have established an annual quiz night, golf day and 5K running event in support of The Captain David Seath Memorial Fund. We will also support over 30 individuals who will participate in a range of challenge events to raise funds next year including Tough Mudder, The London Marathon and the Edinburgh Marathon Festival.

Once again, my sincere thanks to everyone who has gone above and beyond the call in supporting The Captain David Seath Memorial Fund, myself and my family. Should you wish to learn more about ways you can support The Captain David Seath Memorial Fund, please contact me at gary.seath@outlook.com
