Elsie Settle Honoured with the 2026 Captain David Seath Memorial Award

The Captain David Seath Memorial Fund is proud to announce that Elsie Settle has been named the recipient of the 2026 Captain David Seath Memorial Award, in recognition of her outstanding commitment to supporting young carers and creating a more compassionate and inclusive school community.

A pupil at St Margaret’s RC Primary School, Elsie has transformed the way young carers are understood and supported within the school. Drawing on her own experiences as a young carer, she has shown remarkable courage, leadership and selflessness by using her voice to improve the lives of others.

Throughout the past year, Elsie has led assemblies to raise awareness of the challenges faced by young carers, arranged for guest speakers to educate fellow pupils, established a weekly Young Carers Club, sourced games and activities to create a welcoming space for those who attend, and even designed a dedicated Young Carers hoodie to help foster pride and belonging. Her determination to ensure that no young carer feels isolated has left a lasting mark on the school community.

Like Captain David Seath, whose legacy continues to inspire young people to serve others with courage, compassion and determination, Elsie has consistently gone above and beyond for those around her. Her actions have not only improved the daily lives of young carers but have helped every pupil gain a greater understanding of the challenges they can face.

Presenting the award, Libby Seath, Captain David Seath’s mother, said:

“I am delighted to award Elsie David’s trophy, Endeavour. She has been dedicated and committed to improving the school experience of young carers, ensured that all pupils have a better understanding of the needs and challenges faced by young carers, and has left behind a real legacy as she moves on to St Columba’s. Good luck for the future, Elsie!”

The Captain David Seath Memorial Award recognises young people who embody the values David lived by throughout his life: service, humility, resilience and an unwavering commitment to others. Elsie has demonstrated those qualities in abundance, showing that leadership is measured not by status, but by the positive difference made to the lives of others.

As she prepares to begin the next chapter of her education at St Columba’s High School, Elsie leaves behind a stronger, more understanding and more inclusive school community. Her legacy will continue to benefit young carers for years to come, and she serves as an inspiration to everyone who believes that one person can make a lasting difference.

Congratulations, Elsie, on this thoroughly deserved recognition.

Everyone at the Captain David Seath Memorial Fund wishes you every success as you begin your journey at St Columba’s and continue making a difference wherever life takes you.
